Miniature Biosensor

The ability to obtain highly sensitive and specific detection of multiple DNA sequences plays an important role in biomedical diagnosis of disease as well as in environmental monitoring, food safety, and the military. The pathogen detection market for biosensors is worth over $600 million and is expected to grow as legislation continues to create new standards. Currently, most detection methods require long turnaround times and are not suitable for real-time or on-line monitoring. Researchers at Utah State University have developed a novel DNA detection system that integrates sample mixing, detection, and data acquisition in one platform. The system is capable of rapid, on-site detection of multiple DNA contaminants or samples.

Microfluidic device, sensor array, and mini-potentiostat are integrated to perform sample processing, detection, and data acquisition in one Miniature Biosensor platform.
Development Stage
Fabrication and testing of sensor array and integration with other components is in progress. Performance data is being gathered using Cryptosporidium probe DNA.
